ADHD and Test Prep

Effective strategies for students with ADHD preparing for standardized tests like the ACT and SAT.

Standardized tests like the ACT and SAT can feel overwhelming for any student — but for students with ADHD, the challenges are amplified. Timed sections, dense reading passages, and the need to sustain focus for hours at a stretch can make test day feel like an uphill battle. The good news: with the right preparation strategies, students with ADHD can absolutely perform at their best.

One of the most effective approaches is breaking study sessions into short, focused blocks. The Pomodoro Technique — 25 minutes of focused work followed by a 5-minute break — aligns well with how the ADHD brain processes information. Rather than marathon study sessions that lead to burnout, consistent shorter sessions build retention over time.

Practice tests are essential, but the way you review them matters most. After each practice test, spend time understanding why you missed each question — not just what the right answer was. This metacognitive approach helps students with ADHD build pattern recognition and reduces careless errors on test day.

Accommodations are another critical piece of the puzzle. Students with an ADHD diagnosis may qualify for extended time, a separate testing room, or other accommodations through the College Board or ACT. Working with a school counselor or educational consultant to apply for these accommodations well in advance of the test date can make a significant difference.

Finally, don't underestimate the role of sleep, nutrition, and movement in test performance. The ADHD brain is particularly sensitive to these factors. A consistent sleep schedule in the weeks leading up to the test, regular physical activity, and a protein-rich breakfast on test day can all support focus and cognitive performance.
